The Government of Nepal has issued its reaction to the tension in east Europe after Russian President Vladimir Putin authorised a military operation in eastern Ukraine earlier today.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs today said that the Nepal government is closely following the developments in Ukraine and has called on all concerned parties to exercise maximum restraint.
"Nepal views that the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity as enshrined in the UN Charter are sacrosanct and must be fully respected by all member states."
Furthermore, the MoFA also condemned Russia's move to recognise the separatist movements in Ukraine.
"Recognition of Ukraine's Donetsk and Luhansk regions as independent entities goes contrary to the provisions of the UN Charter," the ministry said in a statement, adding "Nepal opposes any use of force against a sovereign country in any circumstance and believes in peaceful resolution of disputes through diplomacy and dialogue."
Earlier today, Russian troops launched their anticipated attack on Ukraine, as President Vladimir Putin cast aside international condemnation and sanctions, warning other countries that any attempt to interfere would lead to "consequences you have never seen."
