Kathmandu, February 24
The meeting of the House of Representatives scheduled for 1 pm today, has been postponed till Friday 1 pm.
The House was set to begin deliberations on ratification of Millennium Challenge Corporation Compact today, as the deadline for approaches for the ratification of the pact.
Nepal government, after a prolonged period of discussions and debates, had decided to table the issue in the parliament on February 20.
However, the ratification of the deal faces uncertainty since the parties in ruling coalition are divided over the issue. While Nepali Congress is the only party that has made its position clear in favour of implementing the deal, its partners in the government - CPN (Maoist Centre), CPN (Unified Socialist), Janata Samajwadi Party and Rastriya Janamorcha Party are mostly against it. CPN-MC chief Pushpa Kamal Dahal, CPN-US senior leader Jhalanath Khanal, bother former Prime Ministers, have publicly given statements against MCC implementation, that has raised questions regarding continuity of the coalition as NC leaders have geared up to go ahead with due process.
Some of the sister-organisations of coalition partners are even taking part in anti-MCC protests that have kept the capital's streets busy of late.
Likewise, main opposition party CPN-UML has been largely staying mum on the issue, despite its endorsement of MCC ratification during its stay in power. Meanwhile, prominent leader of the party Bhim Rawal has been constantly expressing his anti-MCC implementation views, creating confusion regarding UML's stance on the issue.
