KATHMANDU, AUGUST 06

The CPN-UML faction led by Madhav Kumar Nepal and Jhalanath Khanal held its central committee meeting today and urged the establishment faction to halt all organisational activities, including the renewal of party membership and convening of ward and local level party conventions, until the unity efforts brought concrete and positive results. The establishment faction, however, said it could not halt its activities endlessly.

After the faction's central committee meeting today, the Nepal-Khanal faction leader Raghuji Panta told mediapersons that the faction passed a resolution urging the KP Sharma Oli faction to halt all organisational activities as members of the taskforce were still holding unity talks.

Panta said Nepal told the standing committee meeting, which was convened to discuss proposals for the central committee meeting, that he was still in favour of party unity.

He, however, added that leaders of his faction had doubt about Oli's sincerity on party unity.

Meanwhile, the establishment faction held an informal meeting to discuss the amendment to the party statute. UML Spokesperson Pradeep Kumar Gyawali told mediapersons that the party could not halt its activities as local elections and party conventions were approaching.

He said since the Sher Bahadur Deuba government was taking anti-people decisions, any suggestion that the party should not carry out any activity could not be deemed appropriate for the party.
