NWA Pokhara burns minister’s effigy

Pokhara, July 23

Nepali Congress’ sister wing Nepal Women Association Pokhara-Lekhnath metropolis committee today burned the effigy of Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sher Bahadur Tamang for slandering women in his remarks.

A rally that had started from the NC Kaski District Party Office reached BP Chowk and concluded in a corner meeting, where the minister’s effigy was burnt.

Participants in the rally also called for action against the minister. “How can a responsible person like a minister stoop to this level and make such disparaging remark about women giving a hoot to the constitution and the law of the land?” asked woman leader Sita Gurung. NWA Pokhara metropolis Committee President Maya Baral condemned the minister’s remarks. “It’s unfortunate for the person holding such a position to show this attitude against women in this twenty-first century,” she observed.

NC Kaski President Krishna KC also sought action against the minister. “Not only the law minister, the government must also take action against Durga Prasai, the so-called medical college operator,” he said, warning of an agitation both from streets and Parliament.

In the wake of a furore caused by his remark, Minister Tamang issued a statement yesterday and sought apology for his remarks.
