Nepalgunj jail in shambles

Nepalgunj, March 27:

Inmates in Nepalgunj jail are forced to live in risky conditions, as the number of prisoners has exceeded the jail’s capacity.

“The prisoners are living in risky condition as the jail building is in a very bad shape,” jailer

Shyam Lal Lamichhane said, adding, “If there is any natural disaster, the building will collapse.”

The roof leaks during the rainy season every year, the inmates said.

Though several authorities — including the local administration and the government — were repeatedly urged to solve the problem, no action has been taken yet, the prison administration said.

Though the jail can only accommodate 125 inmates, 214 prisoners are staying in the jail at present.

There is a child staying in the jail among the prisoners.

Established some 70 years ago, the jail has not been repaired once.
