NC demands Saptari be declared drought-hit district

Rajbiraj, August 9

The Nepali Congress has demanded that Saptari be declared a drought-hit district, citing problems faced by local farmers in the absence of well-managed irrigation system in the district.

Organising a press meet in Rajbiraj today, Nepali Congress warned of stern protest if the authority concerned failed to address the four-point demand put forth by the party.

District President Dinesh Kumar Yadav at the meeting said the government should declare the district as drought-hit district immediately and provide compensation and relief to local farmers.

Yadav said that Rajbiraj Municipality had defied an order issued by the court. He elaborated that the municipality had gone against a court verdict and demolished a house belonging to Dhurba Dev. “Action should be taken against people’s representatives and staffers of the municipality,” he added.

Yadav went on to say that the local, province and federal governments were involved in irregularities in different development projects in the district. He demanded formation of an all-party investigation committee to look into irregularities.
