Three additional Covid-19 deaths logged in past 24 hours

KATHMANDU, JANUARY 17

The national active Covid-19 caseload of Nepal climbed to 30,877 on Monday as 5,747 people tested positive for the infection in past 24 hours.

The last time Nepal had witnessed over 30,000 actives cases was on September 7 last year when 30,303 live infections were recorded, after which the cases had started to decline.

Up until January 9, there were only 6755 active cases which started to flare since then, crossing the 25 k mark a week later on January 16 and reaching 30k a day later.

This is the first time since mid-2021 that over 5,700 single day cases have been logged. As many as 5,825 cases were confirmed on June 3 last year, after which the cases were on a decline, reaching as low as 197 infections reported on December 9. The 24-hour figures started to steep upward since late December, spiking further with the new year.

Nepal recorded 5,747 new coronavirus infections in last 24 hours, pushing the nationwide tally to 859,485 while the death toll reached to 11,623 as three fatalities were recorded today.

Meanwhile, the total coronavirus recoveries stand at 816,985 with 547 discharges logged today.

As per the latest data provided by the health ministry, a total of 17,465 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours of which 14,014 were PCR tests while 3,451 were antigen tests. With this, a total of 5,018,248 PCR tests have been carried out till date.

Similarly, antigen tests have confirmed 987 positive cases in the past 24 hours. The total number of single-day infections from both the RT-PCR and antigen tests totals to 6,734.

Nepal's Covid-19 recovery rate stands at 95.1%, while the fatality rate stands at 1.4%.

Currently, there are 100 individuals in various quarantine facilities across Nepal.

On Sunday, Nepal had witnessed 4,534 cases of the COVID-19 infection while three persons had succumbed to the disease in the same peiod.
