KATHMANDU, APRIL 12

Janata Samajbadi Party-Nepal lawmaker Pradip Kumar Yadav told the HoR meeting that many eligible citizens were being deprived of Nepali citizenship due to lack of new citizenship law.

He said children of citizens by birth who were qualified to become Nepali citizens had not been able to obtain citizenship because the Parliament had not passed the new law.

He said the citizenship bill finalised by the thematic committee of the Parliament had inserted a new provision proposing to grant naturalised citizenship to women married to Nepalis only after seven years, which was against the spirit of the constitution, and if enacted into law that provision could harm cultural ties that Nepalis shared with Indians.
