NHRC: Govt promoting impunity

Nepalgunj, January 27:

Chairman of National Human Rights Commission Keshav Prasad Upadhyaya today said human rights situation had worsened in the country as criminal cases were left unsolved

in the recent days.

Upadhyaya also said the government was ignoring the constitutional body’s recommendations and that he would quit the office if the government continued ignoring the recommendations.

In an interaction with human rights activists, civil society representatives and journalists here today, Upadhyaya said impunity had reigned supreme, thanks to the government’s insensitivity to human rights.

He alleged that the government promoted impunity by granting amnesty to criminals on political ground.

He opined that the murder of journalist Uma Singh was testimony to the parties’ weakness.

On the occasion, the NHRC chief was apprise of the increasing cases of murder, abduction, intimidation and extortion in the mid western region.
