NHRC members urged to resign

Kathmandu, May 21:

Human rights activists today said the members of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) should have resigned from their posts on moral grounds immediately after the reinstatement of the Parliament.

“They should have quit on moral grounds. I don’t know why they haven’t done so till now,” Subodh Pyakurel, chairman of the INSEC, said.

NHRC member Sudip Pathak, according to Pyakurel, was defending the Royal government before the restoration of democracy.

Charan Prasai, chairman of the Human Rights Organisation of Nepal, said the NHRC members should follow their conscience in deciding whether to quit.

A source at the NHRC said the government had not sought resignations of the body’s members yet.

Rights activist Padma Ratna Tuladhar said many appointments made during the Royal regime are yet to be cancelled.
