KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 6

Preliminary reports suggest there has been no Nepali casualty in the powerful earthquake of 7.8-magnitude that struck the south-eastern region of Turkey today.

Issuing a statement, the Non-Resident Nepali Association said there had been no report of fatality among the Nepali community residing in Turkey so far and that the rescue operation was still under way.

"As per the information received, around 2,500 Nepalis are living in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Antalya, Bodrum, and other cities in Turkey. A small number ofNepalis are also residing in Gaziantep, the epicentre of the earthquake. Nepalis living in Turkey have come into contact with the NRNA National Coordination Committee (NCC) and NCC Turkey. Nepalis living in Gaziantep have also come into contact and are safe. Reports and updates on details of casualties and human losses due to the earthquake in south-eastern Turkey are continuously being made public," the statement said.

Expressing deep condolences to the bereaved families, NRNA has also requested Nepalis living in Turkey to remain safe and in contact with NRNA representatives.
