NSU convention to be put off

Kathmandu, February 18:

The 10th convention of Nepal Students’ Union (NSU), the student wing of the Nepali Congress, will be postponed due to the Tarai unrest. The NSU central committee had scheduled the convention in Janakpur on March 9 -11.

NSU general secretary Badri Pandey told this daily that the convention will be postponed for a month, as they could not hold district conventions in the eastern region.

“The local convention organising committee has also not been able to prepare for the meet due to the unrest,” said Pandey.

The NSU ad hoc committee would call an emergency meeting on February 20 and announce a new date for the convention, he said. “We cannot hold the convention on the scheduled date, as the allocated time is not adequate for the preparation,” said Pandey.

Meanwhile, NC vice-president Sushil Koirala reportedly held a meeting today with student leaders regarding the NSU convention and stressed on holding the same on time.

Pandey, however, denied that there was any interference from the NC. He said the ad hoc committee was solely responsible for the inability in holding the convention on time.
