Sarlahi Police have arrested five individuals, including a woman, for their involvement in a counterfeit Nepali currency production racket on Monday night.
The arrested have been identified as Sultan Mansur (42), also known as Khursaid, from Sundarpur-7, Sunawa Rural Municipality, Mahottari; Ramnarayan Sahani (56) from Chilimiliya-9, Gadhimai Municipality, Rautahat; Dular Sahani (48) from Bairiya-7, Dhanakaul Rural Municipality, Sarlahi; Ramprit Sahani (50) from Brahmapuri Rural Municipality-2; and Sihanta Kumari Devi (35).
According to a press release issued by the District Police Office, Sarlahi, acting on a special tip-off, police intercepted three motorcycles carrying five individuals coming from India and stopped them for a security check at Gorakhkali-8 of Malangwa Municipality at 8:15 pm. Upon inspection, they were found in possession of materials used for counterfeiting currency.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and spokesperson for the District Police Office, Saroj Rai, authorities seized 88 bundles of counterfeit Nepali Rs 1,000 notes, amounting to a total of Rs 176,000. Each bundle contained a real banknote on the top and bottom, with blank white paper cut to currency size in between. Additionally, eight bundles of blank white paper in the size of banknotes were also confiscated.
The arrestees were traveling on motorcycles with Nepali registration number Ba.47 Pa 8757, and two with Indian registration numbers BR 30 C 4766, and BR 30 AI 3049.
Following their arrest, they were presented before the Sarlahi District Court, which extended their custody for seven days for further investigation under currency-related offenses, DSP Rai confirmed.
