Once bitten, MVK shy of peace talks

Itahari, December 27:

Madhesi Virus Killers, an armed Tarai outfit, which recently held peace talks with the government, has blamed the ruling coalition for its lack of seriousness in providing adequate security cover to its leaders, who came over ground for the first time.

Preliminary round of discussions were held in the capital on December 11. JP Yadav, president, MVK, and coordinator of the talks’ team, trained guns on the Maoist-led government at a press conference here today.

“Insecurity has been on the rise since the government is making empty promises of beefing up the security for the underground groups’ leaders, who are willing to hold peace talks. We refuse to go ahead with the second round of the dialogue, if it continues to ignore our plea,” said Yadav. He blamed the local district administration for treating MVK activists as petty criminals.

“The government had promised to be sympathetic to the group’s cause and treat its cadres as political activists. The rest of the armed outfits are targeting us for taking part in the peace talks,” Yadav added.
