NDC backs stir

KATHMANDU: All 14 employees of the National Dalit Commission (NDC), in a statement on Tuesday, expressed solidarity with the ongoing movement for democracy. They decided to provide two days’ salary to the fund set up for the treatment of people injured during protests. — HNS

Peace rally held

GAURA: A peace rally was taken out on Monday on the initiative of the Rautahat DDC. The organising body said Mayor of Gaura municipality Ajaya Kumar Gupta, chairman of Nationalists Group Birendra Kumar Giri, Durga Prasad Yadav of the Nepal Rashtrabad Sangh, representatives of National Journalists’ Union, locals, traders, social workers and other people took part in the rally. — RSS

One killed in mishap

BHADRAPUR: A woman was killed while two others sustained injuries when the rickshaw they were travelling in overturned near the Mahendra Highway on Monday. The victim has been identified as 32-year-old Dhana Maya Khadka of Arjundhara VDC-6. The rickshaw puller and another woman are undergoing treatment in the Kanchanjunga Hospital. — RSS

Two Maoists killed

SURKHET: Two district-level Maoist cadres, Birendra Thapa ‘Sandarv’ and Wakil Bahadur Shahi ‘Chirag’, were killed in a security operation at Latikoili VDC’s Raharpur area on Tuesday morning, a district-based security source said, adding, two other Maoists were arrested. A few days ago, a district-level Maoist leader was killed at the same place, which lies five km from the district headquarters, Birendranagar. — HNS

Harmony campaign

SYANGJA: Putalibazaar Municipality in Syagja district has launched campaigns to end untouchability and to initiate a harmonious relationship among the multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, multi-cultural and multi-religious people. Dalits should get equal treatment and allowed to visit temples, monasteries and mosques, a press release issued by the municipality said. — RSS

Prisoners join stir

MAHENDRANAGAR: Prisoners of the Kanchanpur District Court on Tuesday announced various protest programmes till April 23. In a statement, the agitation committee of the prisoners said they were tortured, ill-treated and neglected when they fell sick. Traders not to pay tax

MAHENDRANAGAR: Businessmen, who have rented shutters belonging to the Mahendranagar Municipality and Town Development Committee, announced on Tuesday they will not pay rent till democracy is restored. President of the Kanchanpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Shiv Raj Pandey, made the decision public after an hour-long sit-in, which was organised to protest police highhandedness on businessmen in Mahendranagar. — HNS

Damages for Gautam

BARA: The District Security Committee, Bara, on Tuesday decided to provide Rs 100,000 as compensation to the family of Hira Lal Gautam of Nijgadh-2, who was killed by security men in a demonstration on Monday. A meeting of the committee also decided to recommend the Home Ministry to arrange for the treatment of persons injured in the incident. — RSS
