Twenty-two hurt

Itahari: Twenty-two persons were hurt today in a fracas between the police and the kin of a prisoner, who was killed three weeks ago at the regional prison based in Sunsari's Jhumka. The agitators had approached the District Administration Office (DAO) in Inaruwa to padlock it.

The injured are undergoing treatment in local clinics. The police fired six tear gas shells to quell the unruly mob. The DAO remained tense throughout the day while the police charged the relatives of Arjun Tamang with batons. On August 25, prisoner Arjun Tamang had been attacked by a group led by guard Dev Kumar Mehata. A probe committee formed after the incident has suggested action against jailor Sanjeeb Niraula, DSP Bimal Niraula and guard Meheta. The victim's supporters demonstrated saying that the culprits were not taken action against and that the victimised family was not compensated for. Meanwhile, Indigenous Janajati Federation Sunsari that spearheaded the demonstration has announced Sunsari, Morang and Jhapa bandh on Friday. — HNS
