Cops, protesters clash

NAWALPARASI: Police and activists of Indigenous Janajatis, Muslim and Dalit Joint Struggle Committee clashed here in Parasi on Sunday. The clash ensued when the protesters tried to padlock the entrance gate of the District Administration Office. In the ensuing clashes, the police rounded up three demonstrators. The activists were staging a sit-in in front of the DAO demanding an immediate implementation of the agreement reached with the government in 2008. Those arrested include the committee’s secretary Singh Bahadur Thapa, Til Bahadur Jhedi Magar and Ghanashyam Ale. — HNS

Flood damages paddy

ACHHAM: Flood in the local Sairi River has swept away a huge swathe of lands of two dozen households in Shera of Basti VDC-8 of the district on Saturday. The ready-to-harvest paddy of the farm was completely damaged in the incident. Subsequently, the families have been pushed on the verge of starvation. Twenty-five victim families have filed application in the District Administration Office Achham seeking relief on Sunday. They said that their paddy of over 150 ropanis of land was destroyed by the flood. — HNS

Schools sans toilets

KALIKOT: Majority of the schools in Kalikot district lack toilet. Consequently, students are forced to use open space for toilet purpose. To make the matter worse, even the schools those having toilets lack water. Some 35,000 students in 10 higher secondary, 33 secondary, 79 lower secondary and 284 primary schools in the district have not been able to use toilets. Concerned parents lamented as authorities were yet to pay heed even as the deadly diarrhoea already claimed four lives in the district. — HNS

Beggar dies

RUPANDEHI: An unidentified man of his fifties, who used to earn his living by begging, died at Butwal based Lumbini Zonal Hospital. Police here in the district reveal that 10 beggars die here in the district due to lack of proper treatment every month as they have no one to pay their hospital bill. “The hospital does not treat them in case they have no one to pay the bill,” said a policeman. — HNS

Road accident death

KAWASOTI: A bus ran over a person at Chormara along the East West Highway in Nawalparasi on Sunday. The dead is Kul Bahadur Mahato, 27, of Narayani of the district. — RSS
