Teachers’ warning

LEKHNATH: Teachers’ Association of Pokhara University (TAPU) has warned that the government should appoint the vice-chancellor within a week or face stronger protest programmes. TAPU president Deepak Raj Poudel stated on Friday that Education Minister Pradip Nepal, during a meeting with the representatives of TAPU on May 21, had promised to appoint VC by May 23. — HNS

Sibbling rivalry

DHADING: A khukuri-wielding man attacked his younger brother in a family dispute in Dandagaun, Kiranchowk-9 at 8:30 pm on Friday. Kumar Adhikari, 35, son of Thulo Krishna Bahadur Adhikari, attacked his brother, Ram Hari Adhikari, 28, injurying him critically. Ram Hari was rushed to Kathmandu for treatment. Kumar has been absconding. — HNS

Rautahat bandh

RAUTAHAT: Normal life was affected due to the one-day Rautahat bandh called by JTMM-Jwala Singh on Saturday to mark the 13th day of the demise of its district chairperson Ajaya Yadav. JTMM cadres torched a tractor at Sundarpurchowk of Chhogarampur VDC and held tractor driver Ram Sogarat Shah for violating the general strike. They also deflated the tyre of a tractor by firing bullets at it at Santpurdostiya VDC. Two tractors were seized, JTMM district commander Sher Singh said. — HNS

JTMM-G siezes land

BARA: The Jay Krishna Goit-led JTMM has grabbed 39 bighas belonging to four persons on Friday. The affected persons include NC (D) central member and member of interim parliament Rishikesh Gautam — 10 bighas; DIGP Nar Narayan Shumsher JBR — 12 bighas; former chairperson of Public Service Commission, Dambar Bahadur Singh — nine bighas; and Gajendra Bahadur Khadka — eight bighas, informed JTMM district coordinator Birat. — HNS

Harka Gurung’s statue

LAMJUNG: A statue of late Dr Harka Gurung will be installed in Besisahar of Lamjung district, said the Nepal Mountaineers’ Association (NMA). Speaking at a meeting here on Thursday, NMA central member Bijay Gurung said, “We came here to choose an appropriate spot to install Dr Gurung’s statue. The NMA has decided to install the statue in Lamjung district.” In an all-party meet held in the presence of Lamjung Chief District Officer Gyan Prasad Adhikari, it was decided to install the statue on the premises of the Tamu Museum. — HNS

Locals catch robbers

PALPA: Locals on Friday caught five robbers who were fleeing after looting belongings from four women. The women had gone into the jungle area to collect firewood at Masyam VDC in Palpa district. Five robbers were caught while one managed to escape, locals said, adding that the robbers were handed over to the police. Villagers rushed to the rescue when they heard women shouting in the nearby jungle. The robbers — Ram Prasad Adhikari, 56, of Balkot VDC in Arghakhanchi district; Bikash Sen, 39, of Waling municipality in Syangja district; Nasaruddin Miya of Tansen municipality; Krishna Bhandari of Kaski and Armit Rai of Okhaldhunga — were injured after the locals beat them up, police said. — HNS

Robber shoots self

BIRGUNJ: Gyan Lal Mandal, 25, of Lalparsa VDC-1 in Parsa, who was fleeing after robbing cash and kind from Kamlji Agarwal at Adarshnagar VDC on Friday, accidentally shot himself to death. Mandal fell on the ground while running away and happened to trigger the pistol he was carrying, injuring himself, police said. Police seized a homemade pistol, two mobile sets and seven rounds of live ammunition from the spot where he fell. He was taken in police custody to hospital where he died on Saturday. A gang of seven dacoits had looted Rs 7,000 in cash, a gold ring, a gold chain, five mobile sets and other valuables from Agrawal’s firm, said DSP Shree Prasad Prasai. — HNS
