18 hurt in mishap

RAMECHHAP: Eighteen persons were injured, two of them critically, when a jeep headed for Manthali from Sanghutar of Ramechhap district overturned at Sunarpani VDC-4 on the Sanghutar-Manthali road section on Wednesday. Of the injured, Laxmi Maya Khadka, 60, and Uma Khadka, 27, are in a critical condition. The injured are being treated in the sub-health post at Sunarpani, the District Police Office said. Most of the injured are locals of Sanghutar and Deurali VDCs of Ramechhap. — HNS

YCL cadre arrested

DHANGADHI: Police on Tuesday arrested a cadre of the Young Communist League (YCL) who had allegedly attacked Kailali assistant chief district officer (CDO), Ganja Bahadur MC, on May 8. A police team led by SP Bijay Raj Bhatta arrested Dinesh Gupta from his home in Dhangadhi municipality. Preparation is on to file a case against him, police said. A group of YCL cadres had attacked MC in his office when the Tharuwan National Mukti Morcha had announced a lockout of all government offices. — HNS

NSU HQ vandalised

Kathmandu: A group of cadres of Nepal Students’ Union (NSU) vandalised their central office at Dhobighat on Wednesday. Kshitij Bhandari, vice-president, NSU, said the students stormed the building at about 3:30 and smashed doors, windows and office furniture. “They even damaged the room of NSU president Mahendra Sharma.” The students were learnt to have come from the TU. They were opposing the decision of central committee to nominate Kailash Koirala as president of the NSU’s TU unit. “He was not a deserving candidate,” said a student. However, Bhandari said the central committee nominated him as there was no other contestant for the post. — HNS

Four hurt in firing

BIRGUNJ: Four persons were injured when a gang opened fire in Dokaila Bahuari VDC of Parsa on Tuesday. Two of the injured are undergoing treatment at the Birgunj-based Narayani Sub-regional Hospital. The gang also kidnapped Sharma Shah Kanu of the VDC, villagers said. — HNS
