Rs 19.1m Indian grant
KATHMANDU: The Embassy of India, the Dailekh District Development Committee and the Narayan Campus, Rampur, recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the construction of a new campus building. The Indian government is providing a grant of Rs 19.1 million for the purpose. In a press release issued here on Friday, the Embassy of India said it was the first project in the education sector in Dailekh district. It further said that the new infrastructure would ease the space constraint in the campus and improve its ability to meet the requirements of higher education in Dailekh and adjoining districts while maintaining high academic standards. — HNS
Karki questioned
KATHMANDU: The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) on Friday quizzed Lokman Singh Karki, chief secretary during the royal regime, over his alleged role in misusing the state treasury while also suppressing the Jana Andolan II. A CIAA source said Karki appeared before the CIAA and recorded his statement. Karki was demoted and transferred to the National Planning Commission as an Officer on Special Duty after the fall of the royal regime last April. — HNS
DAO gheraoed
POKHARA: Activists of the Maoist-aligned All Nepal Peasants’ Association- Revolutionary (ANPA-R), Kaski, gheraoed the Kaski District Administration Office (DAO) on Friday. They were demanding an end to feudal land ownership system and exemption of agricultural loans. District chairman of the ANPA-R Hari Lamichhane said the district administration was gheraoed after the administration turned deaf ears to their demands, which they had put forth on May 6. — HNS
DEO reopens
SIRAHA: Work in the Siraha District Education Office resumed on Friday after the police unlocked the office. Representatives of the Nepal Students’ Union (NSU)-Democratic and Free Students’ Union, Siraha Campus, had padlocked the DEO on Thursday for an indefinite period, demanding dismissal of teachers’ licenses and transparency in the teachers’ appointment process, among others, the Nepal Students’ Union-Democratic, Siraha district chapter, said. — HNS
School office burnt
BARA: Students of Rastriya Secondary School at Raghunathpur in Bara set ablaze the school office on Friday. They had padlocked the school’s office four days ago demanding transparency in the school’s transactions. The students set the office on fire following a dispute with the school management committee over ending the school lockout. Furniture and some documents were destroyed in the fire, the school administration said. — HNS
Schools, DEO locked
PHIDIM: Activists of the All Nepal National Independent Students Union-Revolutionary (ANNISU-R) padlocked the accounts section of the Panchthar District Education
Office and nine government schools in Phidim on Friday. They have put forth a 21-point charter of demands that includes making the secondary level education free. The activists
said they would padlock all the schools in the districts if their demands were not met within
