two killed in mishaps

Jhapa: Two persons were killed and 16 others were injured in two separate accidents in Jhapa on Wednesday. In one incident, a 40-year-old woman was killed and 16 injured when a jeep overturned at Kalikhola in Budhabare VDC at around 11 am. The accident occurred after the jeep’s brakes failed. The condition of four of the hurt is said to be critical. Meanwhile, 55-year-old cyclist Rup Bahadur Rai was killed after a minibus hit his bicycle at Mechinagar municipality-12 on Wednesday. — HNS

NSU flays attack

Kathmandu: The Nepal Students’ Union on Wednesday flayed the Maoists student wing All Nepal Independent Students’ Union- Revolutionary for attacking president of the Bhairava Multiple Campus, Lekhnath Bhattarai. According to NSU, the Maoist students abducted Bhandari and beat him after a dispute. “This is a kind of old mindset of the Maoists who have been carrying guns even after the changed political context,” said general secretary of the NSU Badri Pandey. — HNS

One jumps to death

TANAHU: A 45-year-old man committed suicide by jumping from the China-bridge at Damauli into the Madi river on Wednesday. The dead has been kept at the Damauli hospital for identification, sub-inspector Narahari Adhikari said. — RSS

150 goats dead

NEPALGUNJ: Over 150 goats have died of PPR epidemic (an animal disease) at Khaskushma-4 in Banke in the past 15 days, said chief of the District Veterinary Office, Dr Pushpa Prasad Shrestha. The goats have shown symptoms like diarrhoea and fever, he said adding the disease has affected a large number of goats. The PPR vaccines have been brought to control the disease, he added. — HNS

Rhino missing

Bara: A rhino, which was spotted in the Ratanpuri jungle of Bara on Tuesday, has disappeared, the Parsa Wildlife Reserve said. It had come to the jungle from Chitwan National Park. Policemen have been conducting a search for the rhino. — HNS

RATNANAGAR: Master’s level in Education Faculty has been started at the Balkumari College, Narayangarh from this year. Dean of the faculty, Dr Narendra Bahadur Maharjan, inaugurated the MEd classes on Tuesday. Running classes alone is not enough, Dr Maharjan said. — RSS

6 hurt in Gulmi clash

GULMI: Six persons were hurt when representatives of the Western Nepal Bus Entrepreneurs Association and Gulmi Jeep Entrepreneurs Committee clashed at Ridi, bordering Gulmi with Palpa on Wednesday. The clash ensued after an attempt was made to stop the buses heading from Butwal through Tansen to Gulmi’s Tamghas. Six persons including jeep drivers Dhaniram Neupane, Raju Thapa, bus drivers Bhisma KC were hurt. Additional security forces were sent from district headquarters Tamghas, said CDO of Gulmi Shanker Aryal. — HNS

Five buried to death

DANG: Five villagers died on the spot and two others were injured as a mound buried them when they were digging mud at the Khalanga village development committee in Salyan district on Wednesday. They were digging in the Chandrapal Community Forest to clean up their houses. Those killed have been identified as Sharmila Nepali, 17, of Barala, Guri Nepali, 30, Jhuma Bhandari, 28, Belmati Chalaune, 45, of Syanikhal and Suntali chalaune, 42. — HNS

Khanal’s charge

ITAHARI: CPN-UML standing committee member Jhal Nath Khanal said on Wednesday that the formation of the interim government was being delayed due to the Prime Minister’s ploy to save the king and Maoists’ atrocities. Addressing the Koshi zone-based activists of the CPN-UML, he said: “The interim government could not be formed unless the Maoists terminate atrocities, abductions and donation collections.” — HNS

Nembang’s warning

Kathmandu: Speaker of parliament Subas Nembang on Wednesday said the constituent assembly election was essential to establish the rights of Dalits, indigenous nationalities and women. Addressing an interaction held by Dalit NGO Federation Nepal to mark the 42nd International Day against Racial Discrimination, Nembang warned that a ploy is being hatched not to let CA polls happen. Spokesperson for the CPN-Maoist Krishna Bahadur Mahara said ‘autocratic unitary state mechanism led by the monarchy’ was the major cause of the sufferings that Dalits have been facing for long. — HNS
