Agreement signed

KATHMANDU: The Social Welfare Council (SWC) and the Plan International in Nepal on Tuesday signed a four-year project agreement in accordance with the basic country agreement signed between the SWC and Plan Nepal, said a statement issued here on Tuesday. The $53.2 million programme aims at enhancing the capacity of children, families and communities and provide opportunities to work together with various stakeholders by addressing the structural causes and consequence of poverty. — HNS

Lahan incident report

KATHMANDU: The commission formed by the Council of Ministers on January 23 to investigate into incidents that occurred in Lahan Municipality and other places of Siraha district presented its report to Minister of Home Affairs Krishna Prasad Sitaula, on Tuesday. receiving the report, Minister Sitaula said the government is committed to implement it at the earliest. Chairman of the commission Judge Janardan Bahadur Khadka said the report be meaningful only if it is implemented. Other members of the commission included Rajnarayan Pathak, and Deputy Inspector General of Police Rabindra Pratap Shah. — RSS

Nepal’s message

KATHMANDU: UML general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal has, in a message on the occasion of the 42nd International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, said that the Dalits and the oppressed in Nepal should take this day as a source of inspiration to fight against the discriminatory social customs, exploitation, and oppression. The movement to liberate the Dalits and the oppressed has remained as an inseparable part of the nation’s democratic movement, Nepal said. — RSS

APF base camp

GAIGHAT: A base camp of the Armed Police Force was established in the house of former minister Hari Bahadur Basnet on Tuesday. The Maoists had seized Basnet’s house a few days ago. The local administration removed the Maoists by using force on Monday. Forty-six APF personnel are deputed in the base camp, Udayapur CDO Dalluraj Basnet said, adding the APF base camps will be set up at Katari and Beltar soon. — HNS

Boy killed in mishap

NARAYANGARH: A boy was killed after being hit by a tractor bound for Magani Chowk from Khairahani in eastern Chitwan on Tuesday. Six-year-old Suman Ghimire was killed while his mother Apsara Ghimire and brother Sudeep were also injured in the incident, police said. The tractor did not have a number plate, eyewitnesses said. The police took the tractor in control while the driver of the tractor managed to abscond. — HNS

Code of conduct

RUPANDEHI: Rupandehi chapter of Private and Boarding Schools Organization of Nepal (PABSON) issued code of conduct - 2007 on Tuesday. The code of conduct is related to the admission, academic session - 2064, school management, textbooks, scholarship and monitoring. It is stated that classes of new session will start from April 15. A committee led by PABSON central member Rajan KC has been formed to monitor the code of conduct. — HNS

Official meets PM

KATHMANDU: Chief of the Cooperation Bureau under the Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Koro Besstto, called on PM Girija Prasad Koirala at the latter’s residence at Baluwatar on Tuesday. The duo discussed mutual relations and cooperation. Besstto told reporters that he was impressed by the ongoing peace process in Nepal. He said he has come here to gather information on the assistance needed in the peace process. — RSS

House evacuation

UDAYAPUR: Demanding evacuation of the house belonging to former minister Hari Bahadur Basnet, police have been picketing in the area since Monday evening. The house is being used by the Young Communist League (YCL). Over four dozen policemen led by inspector duo Dil Bahadur Subedi and Balaraj Rayamajhi have been requesting the YCL to vacate the house. However, the YCL has refused to budge. District Secretary Komila said the house was seized as per the party’s central policy. — RSS

Scribe threatened

NUWAKOT: One Chhombule Tamang of Deurali VDC has threatened to kill a Nuwakot-based reporter of Gatishil Samaya daily, Puroshottam Rijal. Tamang, a bus conductor, also assaulted Rijal on Monday over a news item published in the paper recently that said buses plying on the Trishuli-Deurali route are not giving discount to students and bus staffers had assaulted the students. — RSS

Construction begins

DHANGADI: The construction work of a building for the Saraswoti higher secondary school of Geta VDC in Kailali has started with the assistance of the Indian Embassy. Councilor of the Indian Embassy Prabaya Burma laid the foundation stone of the school building amid a programme here on Tuesday. The construction is expected to be completed within 18 months. The school building will have 21 rooms. — RSS
