Over 10,000 prisoners remain at large; search operations ongoing
KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 14
A total of 3,723 prisoners who escaped from jails across the country during the Gen Z protests have been recaptured.
According to the police, as many as 10,320 prisoners are still at large. Some were intercepted by Indian authorities while attempting to flee the country, while others were apprehended by security forces.
A number of prisoners voluntarily returned to custody.
Authorities urged the public to report any information on fugitive prisoners to nearby police stations.
From police custody specifically, 139 escapees have been recaptured, while 2,100 remain missing. The escapes were triggered by arson, vandalism, and unrest during the protests.
At Chitwan District Prison, 235 prisoners of the total 740 prisoners that had escaped,have returned so far.
Additionally, four prisoners from Bhairahawa Prison, one from Damauli Prison, and 14 from other facilities have reported to Chitwan prison. Around 50 inmates remain unaccounted for due to distance and communication delays.
