Overcrowded women block at Saptari prison irks jailbirds

RAJBIRAJ: Women block at the District Prison of Saptari is in a sorry state as 23 prisoners have been accommodated in a narrow 16-foot room.

One of the prisoners, Nunundevi Jha, aggressively complained that they have been facing various difficulties due to the congestion and drew attention of the government as well as media and social organisations toward the issue.

The block had total 28 jailbirds till last week, among whom five were shifted to Mahotari and Siraha prisons owing to lack of space to house them, according to another prisoner.

The women meanwhile also complained about insufficiency of beds and bathroom. Likewise, a leaked tube well nearby their room often damps the area, causing much inconvenience to the jailbirds.

"Congested environment has further made it difficult for us to spend these long days in the prison since we have nothing much to do," an inmate Binda Tamang said, commenting that the prison also lacks equipment and means for recreational activities.

According to the Prison's Nayab Subba Jeevan Bhandari, there is no sufficient budget to make improvements in the Prison as demanded by women.
