Panchthar school chair beats, injures quake-hit students

PHIDIM: A school official in Bharpa village of Panchthar district thrashed seven students, who had developed psychological complications after the devastating April 25 earthquake, black and blue, leaving them injured.

Seven students of the Manedanda Lower Secondary in Bharpa of Panchathar district were injured by School Management Committee Chairman Chairman Narendra Yaba on Thursday.

The students had fallen unconscious after the SMC Chairman had beaten them black and blue.

Birendra Tamang, Dawa Tshering Tamang, Birendra Rasaili, Man KumarTamang, Manish Yonghang, Devendra Tamang and Roshan Gadaili are the students beaten badly.

Among them, the condition of Roshan Gadaili, an eighth grader, is critical and he is receiving treatment at Pathibhara Health Care Hospital of Phidim, the district headquarters.

After the massive earthquake, the students had been frequently shivering at schools and homes.

Earlier, the school used to inform their parents after the students would begin shivering. However, on Wednesday, the school teachers had called the Chairman to consult him for a solution.

But, he only made the problem worse, informed Principal Anendra Yaba.

A seventh grader of the school, Binita Gadaili, informed that the Chairman had beaten her friends by locking them inside a room.

Saraswoti Shiwakoti, Child Right Officer of the District Child Welfare Board, informed that the Chairman has violated rights of the children. The DCWB has lodged a case against Yawa, she added.

Meanwhile, the school was closed after the incident.
