Panel tells govt to construct fast track on its own

KATHMANDU: A panel formed to study details about constructing the Kathmandu-Nijgadh fast track on Monday submitted its report to the government, urging it to run the project on its own investment.

The seven-member panel headed by National Planning Commission Vice-Chairman Min Bahadur Shrestha submitted the report to Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal today.

The panel has also recommended that the government can use the old detailed project report for the construction, according to the PM's Secretariat.

The panel has suggested that the government should allocate an annual budget of Rs 10 billion to Rs 20 billion for the project.

Receiving the report, the Prime Minister said the government would very soon begin the construction work as suggested by the committee.

"There was a debate about whether Nepal can construct the fast track," he said, "Now, the report has been submitted and the confusion has ended."

The Cabinet on December 22 last year had formed the panel and fixed the tenure of a month for the task.

The panel was mandated to study if a new detailed project report is needed for the construction and if members of the public are given opportunities to invest in.
