Panel urges action against 16 in Jhapa

Damak, November 27:

The High-Level Investigation Commission headed by former Supreme Court Justice Krishna Jung Rayamajhi has recommended the government to take action against 16 persons of Jhapa for trying to suppress Jana Andolan II.

Among the named as guilty in the panel’s report submitted to the government last Monday are former Mechi Zonal Administrator Prof Dr Shyam Kishor Singh, former CDO Bhola Prasad Shivakoti and acting CDO Basanta Raj Bhattarai. The commission has found Singh guilty of causing the deaths of Rajan Giri and Suraj Biswas.

Shivakoti and Bhattarai are accused of suppressing the stir and issuing orders to arrest political leaders and media persons during the movement. The commission has recommended action against the then battalion commander of Jabarjung Battalion of Nepali Army at Charaali, Suresh Kumar Karki, present battalion commander Sharad Dhakal, Major Kisan Singh Bhandari and Captain Rabi KC. It also found the then SP of the Mechi Zonal Police, Prabal Shumsher Rana, guilty of issuing orders to arrest the district president of NC, Sudhir Shivakoti and CPN-UML leader Ghanendra Basne.
