Parallel poll system against Janajatis, say speakers

Kathmandu, February 27:

Participants at an interaction today said the parallel election system, which the government has agreed on, would not do justice to the Janajatis.

“The CA polls will be a disaster for the indigenous people and other marginalised communities if the government sticks to the same parallel system,” said Malla K Sundar, a lawmaker and the chairman of the Newar National Forum, while addressing a programme organised by the Newa Sanchar Sanjal.

He said the country should follow such an election system that guarantees representation of all the marginalised and backward groups even if they fail to elect adequate number of members to represent their respective communities.

CPN-UML central member Rajendra Shrestha said: “The type of proportional representation which makes an index of candidates representing all communities, language groups and castes should be prepared to ensure that the result is going to be exactly what our country is like.”

“One need not be afraid of this system if he is really sincere to see representation from all communities and is committed to inclusive democracy,” he said.

He also admitted that many political parties were paying lip-service to inclusiveness in the constituent assembly but “are in fact fighting in the meetings to avoid proportional representation”.

“No matter what the top leaders claim in the mass meetings and interviews, they are issuing whips to stick to parallel election system,” he claimed.
