PM, Martin discuss post-poll situation

Kathmandu, April 18:

Chief of the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) Ian Martin called on Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala today and discussed the post-election situation.

Koirala and Martin discussed the situation before and after the election during the meeting, Prime Minister’s foreign affairs advisor Aditya Baral said.

They also briefly discussed the formation of a new government, and Koirala reportedly told Martin that his party, the Nepali Congress, would take a decision about government formation during its central working committee slated for April 24.

Martin also conveyed greetings extended by UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon to Koirala for holding the constituent assembly election in a free, fair and peaceful manner. Martin is due to brief the UN Security Council on the post-election situation on Monday. Martin handed over a letter of appreciation by UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon for successfully holing the CA polls even in a complex and difficult situation.

During the meeting, PM Koirala is said to have asked Martin to play a constructive role in adjusting the PLA personnel outside the national force. “A party that leads the government cannot keep its private army anymore,” a source quoted Koirala as telling Martin.

Sri Lankan ambassador to Nepal, Amar Lal Sumith Nakandala, also met Prime Minister Koirala today and greeted him for holding the crucial election successfully. The ambassador said that the peaceful CA election has set a precedent for the whole of South Asia, Baral added.
