KATHMANDU, MAY 21

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has summoned an out-of-schedule meeting of the Council of Ministers.

A routine Cabinet meeting held on Thursday had decided to recommend President Bidya Devi Bhandari to proceed with call for formation of a new government in accordance with Article 76 (5) of the Constitution.

Incumbent Prime Minister Oli as well as opposition alliance led by Sher Bahadur Deuba have submitted their respective claims to the President.

While Oli has announced that he has the support of 153 lawmakers, Deuba claimed he is backed by 149 lawmakers - adding up to a total of 302 lawmakers which comes across as misleading since the House of Representatives has only 275 seats.

Meanwhile, leaders from the Madhav Nepal faction of ruling CPN-UML have, one after the other, claimed that their signatures have been misused as they never signed up for endorsing leader of opposition as the Prime Minister against their own party chair.
