PM uses strategy to rein in Maoists
BIRATNAGAR: Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal on Monday inaugurated the newly constructed building of Manmohan Memorial Polytechnic at Hattimuda in Morang district amid heightened security.
Premier Nepal reached the programme venue one our ahead of schedule in a chopper. According to authorities, the PM was airlifted considering a possible obstruction by the UCPN-Maoist. A security ring had circled Nepal during the programme.
Maoist cadre warned of intervention in the programme a couple of days ago. Police detained some activists who showed the PM black flags at the venue. They had gathered around chanting anti-government slogans.
“Maoists have been conducting anarchic activities with the support of arms and PLA fighters,” the PM said. ‘’The first priority of the government is to manage the PLA and their weapons to contain the Maoist aggression.’’
Claiming that the present government would not easily topple, he challenged the Maoists to prove a majority in the parliament.
The PM accused that the former rebels were trying to push the country into a conflict by means of their protest.
“It is the Maoist illusion to think that they can make a government by means of the street protest,’’ he remarked, adding that it would be difficult to draft the statue without managing the Maoist combatants.
Deputy Prime Minister Bijaya Kumar Gachhadar, Ministers Ramchandra Kushwaha and Mahendra Raya Yadav were also present on the occasion. They claimed that the Maoist’s stir would not shake the government.Indian Ambassador to Nepal Rakesh Sood said the Indian government wanted the present coalition to take the peace process to a logical conclusion. He added that India also wished to see an early writing of the constitution for the sake of establishing peace in Nepal.Manmohan Polytechnic, spread over 14 bighas of land, was constructed with an Indian aid.
The polytechnic has been running three-year bachelor’s technical programmes.
The PM could not attend a programme organised by Morang Business Organisation due to security reason.
