Police raid jewellery shop

KATHMANDU: A special probe committee led by Ishwar Raj Paudel, joint secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, on Monday raided jewellery shops owned by Rajendra Kumar Shakya, who is accused of purchasing smuggled gold. The team confiscated gold, silver and diamond from the shops located in Durbar Marg and New Road.

Shakya, who was previously arrested on charges of buying smuggled gold, is in judicial custody as per the Morang District court’s order.

Earlier on Friday, police had raided Mohan Agrawal’s house in Dillibazar. Agrawal is accused of providing funds to smuggle 33 kg gold.

Police recovered cash, gold biscuits, a special jacket for smuggling gold, bank cheques and expensive alcohol from his house. Agrawal has been absconding after police launched an investigation into the gold smuggling case.
