Police rain batons to control mob, 37 hurt

DIPAYAL: At least 37 people, including children, disabled, and a journalist were injured today when the police indiscriminately baton charged them in a bid to control an unruly mob. The journo was collecting news from a site where fighting ensued between two youths.

The district headquarters, Silgadi, remained tensed throughout the day today.

Police detained Rabin Singh, Bikram Bhandari, Rabing Nepali, Keshav Bhandari, Jhapat Bista and Doti reporter of Nepal Samacharpatra daily Bimal Bista.

Meanwhile, journalists organised a sit-in in front of the DAO demanding stern action on the police personnel who they said mercilessly thrashed the locals, including a journalist.

Secretary of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists Doti chapter Ramhari Ojha, warned that the protest would continue unless the administration takes action against DSP Chiranjivi Devkota and SI Kalusingh who were involved in the melee.

Doti chapter of FNJ has condemned the incident.Meanwhile, Nepal Chamber of commerce and industries Doti chapter called Silgadi Bazaar Bandh to protest the police action. Vehicular movement also came to stand still due to the bandh. Deputy-president of NCCI Doti Chapter Birendra Shah, mentally retarded Katti Bhatta, different abled Yagya Thapa have also been injured in the incident.
