Policies on tackling climate change

KATHMANDU: At long last, the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology (MoEST) is all set to introduce policies on climate change to tackle the threat of global warming.

Speaking at an interaction organised by Eco Friends Nepal, Umesh Mainali, secretary, MoEST, said, “We are preparing the draft of the policy, which is expected to be endorsed within two months,” adding, “The ministry is also planning to set up a separate department to deal with issues relating to climate change.” Mainali said that the ministry would create positions for environment officer in all the 75 districts in a bid to effectively implement the policies. “Policies on mitigating disasters will also be included in the periodic plan,” he said.

In the programme, four papers were presented on issues of climate change and its impacts on the environment, human life and nature. Parashu Ram Gairhe, coordinator, EFN, stressed on the need for youths to be aware of the issues relating to climate change. The EFN also awarded the winner of the inter-school competition.
