The Election Commission has started preparation for the election of the president and the vice-president.
EC's Assistant Spokesperson Surya Prasad Aryal said the presidential elections should be held at least one month before the termination of the post, as per the President and Vice-President Election Related Act. There is a provision that the EC should determine election dates and inform the same to the government.
The EC is preparing to hold presidential elections by February 11, as the term of the incumbent president ends on March 13.
According to Article 63 of the Constitution of Nepal, the president and the vice-president have a fiveyear term. Elections to these posts are conducted on different dates.
A total of 334 members of the federal Parliament and 550 members of provincial assemblies will vote in these elections. As per the current population of the country, the weightage of each member of federal Parliament is 79 and that of a provincial assembly member is 48.
