A routine security check at Gaur Prison has led to the seizure of suspected narcotic tablets hidden in a parcel intended for an inmate serving time in a drug-related case, raising fresh concerns about attempts to smuggle contraband into correctional facilities.
Police said 10 tablets labelled "Nitrazom-10" were recovered from a bag of clothes brought for Rupesh Kumar Yadav, an inmate at the prison in Gaur Municipality-3.
The tablets were discovered during an inspection of the parcel before it was handed over to the inmate. Police subsequently detained Anil Kumar Yadav, 30, of Madhav Narayan Municipality-3, who had arrived at the prison claiming to be delivering clothes.
Authorities have launched an investigation under the Narcotic Drugs Control Act to determine the nature of the tablets and whether others were involved in the alleged smuggling attempt.
The incident has highlighted ongoing concerns about prison security and the challenges authorities face in preventing drugs and other prohibited items from reaching inmates.
