Protesters vandalise dozens of vehicles in Saptari

SAPTARI: Cadres of the United Democratic Madhesi Front have vandalised dozens of vehicles in different places on the East-West Highway in Saptari last night.

These vehicles were heading to their destinations under police escort.

The Front is waging an agitation in the Tarai-Madhes region in protest against the Constitution for over 72 days now.

Police said the agitating Front cadres pelted stones at dozens of vehicles in Bhardaha, Rupani, Kanchanpur Baira, Barmajhiya among other places in the district in course of police escorting.

The protesters who were hiding on the side of the Highway threw rocks at the vehicles causing minor damages, according to the District Police Office, Saptari.

The District Administration Office has declared the Highway as a riot-hit zone and has been escorting the vehicles to their respective destinations.

In this connection, the Saptari Police managed to get over 600 vehicles to their respective destinations to the east and west of the district under police escorting, the District Police Office stated.

Meanwhile, the UDMF Saptari chapter has said it has made the protests more stringent. The Front had relaxed the movement for some time in view of the Dshain festival.

In its latest move of tightening the protest programmes, the Front has been holding demonstrations at different places including the district headquarters Rajbiraj and also enforced closure of the market, shops, transport, educational institutions, industries, trade and businesses.
