Province renaming not on poll agenda

Pokhara, November 17

Renaming provinces will be one of the major tasks of the representatives of provincial assemblies. However, most of the candidates contesting in the provincial election from Province-4 have kept silence over the agenda, so much so that a few candidates were even found unaware of this responsibility.

When asked, Lamjung Constituency-‘Kha’ left alliance candidate Prithvi Subba Gurung, who is also CPN-UML organisation department chief, Tanahun-2 ‘Ka’ Nepali Congress candidate Pradip Poudel and Kaski-2 ‘Kha’ left alliance candidate Rajkaji Gurung (CPN-MC) said renaming provinces was not a big deal.

“We’ll keep a name that will be suitable and satisfying for everyone,” said candidates in unison.

As per Section 33, Article 295 of the constitution, a province can be renamed with two third majority of the full strength of the concerned provincial assembly.

As for the matter of provincial capital, however, there is a tacit understanding among all candidates of the province — they all agree to make Pokhara the provincial capital. No voices of protest have been heard in this regard.
