Railway track likely along fast-track road to Tarai

Kathmandu, August 13:

The 82-km fast track road to link the capital city with Tarai is likely to include a trail along the road so that it could be used for the construction of railway line.

The government has decided to involve private companies to develop the project as per the Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) model.

“Though the road is going to be a fast track one, we are thinking of including a trail along the road so that it could be used to develop railway line in the future,” said Tulasi Prasad Sitaula, director-general of the Department of Roads. Sitaula said the government should go for electric railway.

The government has selected Reliance India Limited of India and Landmark Worldwide of Korea out of three companies that had submitted bids to construct the road.

It might take one or two month to finalise the bidder and then the construction will follow, he said.

On June 3, the department had invited expression of interest from different builders to develop the project on BOOT model. The selected bidder will construct the road, operate it for income generation and will hand it over to the government after the stipulated time.

Sitaula informed that the Asian Development Bank would be involved in the construction of the 20-km segment of the road, stretching from Shripur to Hetauda.
