Rajbiraj prison sheltering inmates thrice its capacity

RAJBIRAJ: The Saptari District Prison has been accommodating thrice the number of inmates than its normal capacity.

The prison has the capacity to accommodate around 125 inmates. But there are at present 315 inmates including 18 women, informed officiating jailor Satya Narayan Yadav. According to him, there are 196 male inmates in Block A, 107 male inmates in Block B and 18 women inmates in Block C of the prison.

The overcrowded prison is causing much inconvenience to the inmates as they have to stay in the queue for a long time to fill water from the tap and use the toilet.

Moreover, the prison is a 67-year-old structure made of stones and mud and not spacious enough to accommodate these many inmates.

Jailor Yadav said that the main structure of the prison is very old and unsafe, stressing on the need to construct a new prison.
