Kathmandu, May 24:
At a time when the civil society is pressing the government to continue with the current office bearers of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the recently constituted three-member recommendation committee headed by Chief Justice Hari Prasad Sharma today hinted that new officials would be appointed to run the NHRC. “We are seeking to appoint appropriate candidates in the NHRC,” said the Speaker of the dissolved House of Representatives Tara Nath Ranabhat, who is one of the members of the recommendation committee. “We will recommend candidates who will represent every sector as required by the NHRC Act 2053 BS,” he said. Ranabhat and Foreign Minister Ramesh Nath Pandey today held talks with Chief Justice Sharma at the Supreme Court and discussed the new names.
The NHRC chairman Nayan Bahadur Khatri and its members are taking compulsory retirement on May 26 after completing their five year tenure. “We will formally start the selection procedure only after the ordinance is published in the Nepal Gazette. Since the King has issued the ordinance amending Clause 4 (2) of NHRC Act 2053 BS regarding the recommendation committee, we are waiting the decision to be published in the Nepal Gazette,” Ranabhat said. The ordinance is likely to be published in the Nepal Gazette tomorrow.
