KATHMANDU, JUNE 17

The endangered red panda has been confirmed in three local levels of Kalikot district, raising hopes for biodiversity conservation in the Himalayan region.

Conservation organisations said the elusive species was found in Rurubanchu Pasture of Tilagufa Municipality, Haudi Lake of Shubhakalika Rural Municipality and Mahabu Pasture of Mahawai Rural Municipality.

Officials and conservationists have urged local communities to protect bamboo and nigalo forests, which form the species' primary habitat.

Conservationists warn that forest fires, human activities and attacks by dogs continue to threaten the red panda's habitat.

Local governments have pledged to strengthen conservation efforts and raise public awareness to protect the endangered mammal.
