Refugees seek role in Bhutan polls

Damak, April 21 :

Exiled Bhutanese refugees, who are activists of different political parties, have urged the Bhutanese king to involve them in the general election. The National Front for Democracy (NFD), an umbrella front of exiled Bhutanese parties, sent a statement to Bhutanese king Jigme Namgyal today and urged him to involve the refugees staying outside Bhutan in the election.

The refugees from all seven camps staged a sit-in at Mechi Bridge for an hour. They sent the statement to the king by post and fax.

Addressing the sit-in, Pinjore said that an election held without the involvement of the people wanting democracy could not represent the public sentiment.

Meanwhile, chairperson of the Bhutanese Movement Steering Committee and rights leader Teknath Rizal alleged that Bhutan was trying to deceive the international community in the name of holding election.
