KATHMANDU, MAY 25

The ruling alliance led by the Nepali Congress has won mayoral race in five metropolitan cities, with independent candidate Balen Shah leading in Kathmandu Metropolitan City.

CPN (Unified Socialist) candidate for mayor in Pokhara Metropolitan city Dhanraj Acharya won the race with a huge margin today. Acharya, who is supported by the ruling alliance, got 58,893 votes. The UML's Krishna Thapa got 52,848 votes.

With this victory, the ruling alliance candidates have won the mayoral race in five metropolitan cities - Pokhara, Bharatpur, Birgunj, Biratanagar, Lalitpur, and Biratnagar.

In Kathmandu, independent candidate Balen Shah had polled 56,148 votes till 8:30pm. NC's Srijana Singh is trailing him with 35,478 votes, followed by UML's Keshav Sthapit, who has got 34,854 votes.

The Nepali Congress has won mayoral contest in 326 rural municipalities/ municipalities, followed by UML (204), CPN-MC (121), Janata Samajbadi Party-Nepal (30), and CPN (US) (20).
