SAC to finalise election related bills soon

Kathmandu, February 27:

The first meeting of the State Affairs Committee (SAC) of the legislature-parliament today decided to finalise the Election Commission Bill, 2007 and Election (Crime and Punishment) Bill, 2007 without delay.

Some lawmakers also concluded that the eight-party leadership was not serious on constituent assembly elections.

Citing the remark of the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s Special Representative to Nepal, Ian Martin, that the election scheduled for June may have to be postponed, the lawmakers said, “A political consensus is yet to be reached and the parties are unable to have a single voice on the polls.”

“Political leaders must be serious and certain matters need to be clarified for holding the polls on time,” said lawmaker Hom Nath Dahal.

Lawmakers Hirdaya Ram Thani, Ishwar Pokhrel, Purna Bahadur Khadaka, and Parashu Ram Meghi Gurung urged the parliament to pass the bills under consideration.
