DANG, MARCH 26

Marking the 10th anniversary of Global Water Works, a significant milestone has been achieved in improving access to safe drinking water for schoolchildren at Shree Baalbuddhi Primary School in Gadhawa-6, Khabari community of Dang District.

The dug well at the school, which had long been unreliable due to insufficient depth, has now been successfully rehabilitated and upgraded. Previously, the well would dry up during the dry season, forcing students to bring water from home in plastic bottles or walk long distances to nearby streams during school hours. This not only disrupted their studies but also exposed them to safety risks and health concerns.

Recognizing these challenges, Partnership for Sustainable Development Nepal (PSDN), in collaboration with Global Water Works, undertook the deepening and technical improvement of the well to ensure a sustainable and year-round water supply. Today, the rehabilitated well provides a reliable source of safe drinking water for approximately 120 students, creating a healthier and more supportive learning environment.

The impact of this initiative extends far beyond access to water. With safe drinking water available on school premises, students can now focus more on their education without the burden of fetching water. Improved hydration contributes to better concentration, attendance, and overall academic performance. Furthermore, access to clean water significantly reduces the risk of waterborne diseases, promoting better health and well-being among children.

The project also plays an important role in enhancing social dignity and equity. Students no longer need to carry water in reused plastic bottles or leave school premises in search of water, fostering a sense of pride, inclusion, and safety. Girls, in particular, benefit from improved school conditions, which support their regular attendance and participation in education.

In addition to health and education benefits, reliable water access contributes to long-term economic and social development. By reducing time spent on water collection, both students and families can engage more productively in education and livelihood activities. The initiative also strengthens community cohesion, as parents, local stakeholders, and the School Management Committee actively participated in the project.

Global Water Works has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding such life-changing interventions. Building on the success of this project, the organization plans to support more underserved communities and community schools in the coming days, helping to ensure that safe drinking water becomes accessible to those who need it most.

Partnership for Sustainable Development Nepal (PSDN), as the implementing partner, has played a key role in mobilizing local resources, ensuring technical quality, and fostering community ownership of the project. The collaborative effort highlights the importance of partnerships in addressing fundamental development challenges.

The school community, including students, teachers, parents, and the School Management Committee, has expressed sincere gratitude to Global Water Works and PSDN for their invaluable support. This initiative stands as a powerful example of how targeted interventions in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) can transform lives, strengthen communities, and create a brighter future for children.

As efforts continue to scale up, initiatives like this reaffirm that access to safe drinking water is not only a basic human necessity but also a foundation for improved education, health, dignity, and sustainable development.
