Safe shelter being provided to victims of domestic violence

Bajura, May 5

The Women and Children Office has been providing safe shelter to women that have fallen victims to domestic violence in Bajura district headquarters Martadi.

The home was built with the combined support of Bajura District Development Committee, Office of Women and Children, Norwegian Fund, and UNFEA. Chief of Women and Children Office Bajura Kamala Shahi said the house was built to provide safe accommodation facility for women victims who come to report their problems.

According to Shahi, as many as 23 victims are taking shelter in the house since September last year. Each rescued victim of domestic violence is provided shelter in the house for 15 days, she said.

The house provides lodging and food facility for the victims during their stay. “Earlier, local women were unable to fight domestic violence as they would not have any support system. But now the safe home provides counselling and various other livelihood training to women for them to become self-reliant,” said Women Rights Forum Chairperson Rukmani Shah.

“The safe house has also made justice accessible to the women victims,” said a victim. Two support staff have been managed to provide necessary services to needy women, as per Babin Nepali, UNFEA Bajura coordinator.
