Saptari flood: Sleepless nights for Tilathi locals

RAJBIRAJ: More than two weeks have passed, Rajkumar Jha of Tilathi Koiladi Rural Municipality-1 in Saptari district has not been able to sleep well.

Jha fears that his house will be inundated with flood again. The fear of inundation makes him awake the whole night.

Last month the flooded Khando River had gushed in the settlement belonging to Jha. Tuesday's incessant rain flooded the Khando River that gushed in the settlement creating a sense of urgency.

Likewise, the whole villagers of Tilathi are living in fear of flood that is to come again.

Locals expressed their grief that with just hours of rainfall in the northern Chure region, inundation takes place in the area for which they are compelled to stay alert during the whole rainy season.

The rainfall that started from Tuesday swamped the whole village with the flood, informed Satish Kumar Singh, Chairperson of Tilathi Koiladi Rural Municipality. He further informed that as many as 2,500 households were deluged with flood and 25 families were displaced.

It has been reported that the flood wreaked havoc on three embankments of Khando River and entered the settlement.

"There has not been a single home in Ward no. 1 where the water has not entered inside," said Singh and added that 40 per cent of households in Koiladi and Barsain in the district were also inundated.

Although Nepal Army personnel had created an embankment by keeping bags of sand to prevent the flood on July 13, the enraged Khando River took a different channel, informed the Rural Municipality.

The flood has also submerged the Rural Municipality Office with around four feet of water. Though the office belongings are safe, the Municipality has not been able to drain out the water.

The flood has also disrupted the flow of traffic in Tilathi's Rajbiraj-Kunauli road section.
