Death toll in Saptari incident rises

RAJBIRAJ: The death toll in Monday's police firing in Saptari has reached five after one more person succumbed to injuries at the Dharan-based BP Koirala Health Sciences on Friday.

The deceased has been identified as 34-year-old Inar Yadav of Madhepura of Jamuni VDC in Saptari district.

According to Sadbhawana Party's Saptari district chairman, Sunil Kumar Jha, Yadav was taken to the BPKIHS where he was admitted to the ICU with bullet injuries in his chest. He, however, breathed his last today.

Two more persons are said to be in critical condition.

Several people were injured after police opened fired at the protesters supporting United Democratic Madhesi Front tried to disrupt the CPN-UML's function in Maleth VDC near Rajbiraj.

Protesting the fatal incident, the UDMF has imposed an indefinite strike in the district since Tuesday.

The UDMF cadres burnt a passenger bus on charge of defying their call in Maleth. The bus was heading to Rajbiraj from Birgunj of neighbouring Parsa district.

Before setting it on fire, the protesters had asked the passengers to  get off the bus.

Meanwhile, the UDMF said they will hold a joint funeral procession of those killed in the incident on Saturday.

According to Amarnath Mandal, Saptari spokesperson of UDMF, the bodies will be brought to Rajbiraj from Dharan after postmortem at the BPKIHS this evening.
