Sarlahi shut down in protest over NC cadre’s death

RAUTAHAT: Nepali Congress (NC) cadres shut down Sarlahi district on Sunday in protest over NC cadre’s death in a violent shooting incident on Tuesday.

Protestors halted transportation along the East-West Highway and closed businesses and educational institutions in major parts of the district.

60-year-old Ram Bilas Mahato, a cadre of NC, was shot dead and seven others were injured following an episode of violent clash between cadres of Nepali Congress and ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) in Ramnagar Rural Municipality of Sarlahi district on October 30.

NC had warned to not claim the body of Mahato unless the person behind the killing was arrested. The deceased’s body has not yet been claimed by the family members in protest.

The party has also demanded that Mahato be declared a martyr, the guilty be arrested, relief be provided to victim’s kin, and free treatment be provided to those injured.
